Why It Matters
Most longevity supplements target one pathway. C60 is structurally unique: a spherical cage of 60 carbon atoms that can repeatedly neutralize free radicals without being destroyed itself. Traditional antioxidants like vitamin C donate an electron and are spent. C60 acts catalytically, which may explain why rats in the landmark 2012 Baati study lived nearly twice as long as controls. For anyone building a longevity stack, understanding the difference between industrial C60 (potentially harmful) and ESS60 (processed for human safety) is critical before purchasing.
Who Should Listen
- Anyone building a longevity supplement stack who wants to understand the science behind C60 before buying
- Biohackers curious about antioxidants that work differently than standard vitamins and polyphenols
- Frequent travelers looking for compounds that may reduce jet lag and oxidative stress from flying
- Pet owners exploring supplements for animal health and longevity
C60 Supplement Science, Benefits & Safety
Nick Urban picks up where Episode 105 left off, this time reporting back after several months of daily ESS60 use. Chris Burres, co-founder of MyVitalC and carbon nanomaterial scientist since 1991, explains how three Rice University scientists discovered fullerene (C60) in 1985 and won the Nobel Prize eleven years later. The molecule performs as well or better than existing materials in nearly every industrial application, but the real breakthrough came from a toxicity study: rats given C60 in olive oil lived 90% longer than controls.
Chris walks through the real-world benefits customers report: improved sleep, better energy, faster workout recovery, immune support, joint health, neuroprotection, and vision improvements. He explains the BOSS (Buffering Oxidative Stress System) theory, which proposes that C60 enters mitochondria and catalytically neutralizes free radicals without being consumed. Unlike traditional antioxidants, C60 can scavenge multiple radicals before being cleared from the body.
The conversation shifts to product safety and quality. Chris explains why industrial C60 (containing residual solvents like toluene) is dangerous while ESS60 is processed specifically for human consumption. He reveals that when MyVitalC tested 22 competitor brands, only one besides their own met the concentration claimed on the label. The episode closes with discussion of stacking C60 with hydrogen, using it for travel protection, and the difference between olive oil, avocado oil, and MCT oil carriers.
Key Terms Quick Reference
[03:29] C60 (Carbon 60) / Fullerene / Buckminsterfullerene
A spherical molecule made of 60 carbon atoms arranged in the shape of a soccer ball. Discovered in 1985 at Rice University. Also called “buckyball” after architect Buckminster Fuller whose geodesic dome it resembles.
[38:34] ESS60
MyVitalC’s designation for C60 that has been purified and processed specifically for safe human consumption. Industrial C60 may contain residual solvents (like toluene) that are harmful. ESS60 removes those contaminants.
[18:40] BOSS (Buffering Oxidative Stress System)
Chris Burres’ theory for how C60 works. Rather than donating a single electron like traditional antioxidants, C60 catalytically neutralizes multiple free radicals in the mitochondria without being consumed. This may explain its outsized longevity effects.
[40:50] HPLC (High Performance Liquid Chromatography)
Laboratory equipment used to identify and measure the concentration of a substance. MyVitalC uses HPLC to test every batch of ESS60, verifying the concentration matches their label claims.
[46:39] Lipid Fullerene
C60 dissolved in oil (olive, avocado, or MCT). The oil dissolution makes C60 bioavailable at the monomolecular level. Since cell walls are lipid-based, oil-dissolved C60 may more easily enter cells and mitochondria compared to water-soluble forms.
[38:00] Aryl Hydrocarbon Receptor (AHR)
A receptor involved in regulating immunity, stem cell maintenance, and cellular differentiation. Research suggests C60 may interact with this receptor, potentially explaining some of its immune-modulating effects.
How Did Rats Live 90% Longer on C60?
The short answer
In the 2012 Baati study, Wistar rats given C60 dissolved in olive oil not only survived 90% longer than control rats but continued to thrive even after dosing was stopped. The study was originally designed as a toxicity test, not a longevity study.
What the research showed
Scientists expected C60 to be toxic based on its molecular structure. Instead, the treated rats showed no signs of harm and outlived controls by a massive margin. The control rats receiving plain olive oil also lived slightly longer than water-only controls, which is consistent with the known health benefits of olive oil. But the C60-in-olive-oil group dramatically outperformed both. Chris Burres notes that the rats were not dosed continuously. They received C60 for a set period, then dosing stopped, yet the longevity effect persisted. This suggests C60 may trigger lasting protective changes rather than requiring continuous supplementation.
What to do about it
The rat data is compelling but has not yet been replicated in humans. Chris mentions a new study is in progress to recreate the original findings. If you want to explore C60 supplementation, use only ESS60-grade product (not industrial C60) dissolved in olive oil for maximum concentration and bioavailability. Start with one teaspoon daily and track subjective markers like energy, sleep quality, and recovery.
“They put it in a toxicity study, and instead of being toxic, the test subjects lived 90% longer than the control group.” – Chris Burres

Why Is Industrial C60 Dangerous?
The short answer
Industrial C60 contains residual solvents like toluene that are carcinogenic. Peer-reviewed research has proven industrial-grade C60 is harmful to consume. ESS60 undergoes additional processing to remove these contaminants.
What Burres found
When MyVitalC tested 22 competing C60 brands, the concentrations were “woefully low.” Only one competitor (besides MyVitalC) had the concentration claimed on the label. One brand had a higher concentration, which Chris attributes to either extremely small suspended particles (not truly dissolved and therefore not bioavailable) or residual solvents increasing the solubility. Toluene-contaminated C60 dissolves more easily in oil, which means a higher measured concentration could actually indicate a less safe product. Chris also explains that raw C60 powder, even ESS60 grade, simply passes through the body unabsorbed. The molecule must be dissolved in oil at the monomolecular level to become bioavailable.
What to do about it
Never buy the cheapest C60 product. Unlike generic supplements such as creatine or glycine where price shopping is reasonable, C60 quality varies dramatically between manufacturers. Look for companies that use HPLC testing on every batch, have expertise in carbon nanomaterials, and use extended mixing protocols (MyVitalC mixes for 2.5 to 3 weeks rather than the original 2-week protocol).
“There is actually peer-reviewed published research that proves industrial C60 is harmful. ESS60 is C60 that has been processed for safer human consumption.” – Chris Burres

Which C60 Oil Carrier Should You Choose?
The short answer
Olive oil holds the highest concentration (0.8 mg/mL), avocado oil is mid-range (0.6 mg/mL), and MCT oil holds the least (0.3 mg/mL). For maximum potency, choose olive oil. For coffee mixing, MCT oil works best.
What Burres recommends
Chris personally uses both daily: a teaspoon and a half of MCT-based ESS60 blended into his morning coffee, plus a teaspoon and a half of the olive oil product taken straight. He also puts the olive oil version on salads at lunch. The reason for two products is practical rather than scientific. MCT oil blends cleanly into coffee while olive oil has a stronger flavor profile that pairs better with food. From a concentration standpoint, olive oil is more than twice as potent as MCT, so if you are only going to use one product, the olive oil version delivers the most ESS60 per serving.
What to do about it
If budget or simplicity matters, start with the olive oil version for the highest ESS60 concentration per serving. If you want to add C60 to coffee or smoothies, the MCT version integrates more easily. Take it in the morning with or before food.
C60 Buying Checklist
- Verify the product uses ESS60 (not industrial-grade C60) by checking the label and manufacturer claims
- Look for HPLC testing documentation. If a company does not test every batch, move on
- Choose olive oil carrier for maximum concentration (0.8 mg/mL) unless you specifically need MCT for coffee
- Avoid any product claiming concentrations above 0.8 mg/mL in olive oil. Higher numbers may indicate residual solvents or undissolved suspended particles
- Start with one teaspoon daily in the morning. Track sleep, energy, and recovery for 4 to 6 weeks before adjusting
- If you are on medications, consult your doctor first (though no contraindications have been identified)

Frequently Asked Questions
Is C60 safe for human consumption?
Industrial-grade C60 is not safe. It contains residual solvents like toluene that are carcinogenic. ESS60, which is C60 processed specifically for human consumption, has no known contraindications with medications or supplements. The key distinction is sourcing: only purchase C60 products that use ESS60-grade material with HPLC batch testing.
How long does C60 stay in the body?
C60 has a relatively long half-life compared to most supplements. In the landmark rat study, the longevity benefits persisted even after dosing was stopped, suggesting the molecule may trigger lasting protective changes in mitochondria rather than requiring continuous presence in the bloodstream.
What is the difference between C60 & ESS60?
C60 is the generic name for any carbon 60 molecule, including industrial-grade material used in manufacturing. Industrial C60 may contain harmful residual solvents. ESS60 is MyVitalC’s designation for C60 that has been purified and processed to remove contaminants, making it safe for human consumption. ESS60 is the same molecule used in peer-reviewed research studies.
Can you take C60 with other supplements?
Yes. Chris Burres states that MyVitalC has no known contraindications with any medications or supplements. Some users stack it with molecular hydrogen, glutathione, or melatonin. However, if you take prescription medications, consult your doctor before adding any new supplement.
Does C60 help with jet lag?
Chris Burres and his wife report significantly reduced jet lag when taking ESS60 before flights, even on trips with 12 to 18 hour time zone changes. A MyVitalC distributor who is a commercial pilot also reports positive effects. The mechanism may relate to C60’s antioxidant protection against the oxidative stress caused by high-altitude flying and circadian disruption.

Full Episode Transcript
Nick Urban [00:00:00]: Hello and welcome to Mind Body Peak Performance with your host, Nick Urban. Today we are picking up a conversation we began back on episode number 105, and that is on a Nobel Prize winning molecule that was heavily researched by NASA for all kinds of different applications. But today we are mostly focusing on human health and pet health. This particular molecule is not very well known, but it holds incredible promise. Sharing this with us again is Chris Burres, a carbon materials nanoscientist and co-founder of MyVitalC. Their special version of human-safe C60 is called ESS60. You will learn why that distinction makes a big difference later in the episode.
Chris Burres [00:03:29]: In 1985, three scientists at Rice University here in Houston discovered the third form of carbon. We are used to diamond, graphite, and now there is a whole gamut of molecules called fullerenes. The most abundant one is 60 carbon atoms in the shape of a soccer ball. The three scientists won the Nobel Prize in 1996. The material is amazing. It performs as well or better than the current best material in almost every application. They thought the molecule would be toxic, so they put it in a toxicity study. Instead of being toxic, the Wistar rats lived 90% longer than the control group.
Nick Urban [00:04:56]: Can you explain the benefits people are seeing? Longevity is a big one, but if people don’t want to wait and see, what else do they experience?
Chris Burres [00:05:34]: People take the product and typically notice sleep first. Deeper, more restful sleep. The theory is that when mitochondria in your brain work more efficiently, your brain goes to sleep faster and more deeply. After that, energy. Not a caffeine spike, just consistent energy. Then joint health, athletic performance, recovery. One individual had a torn retina and their vision improved significantly. We have stories about neuroprotection, improved cognition. People who give it to their pets see remarkable improvements. The pet results are compelling because there is no placebo effect with animals.
Nick Urban [00:18:40]: Can you explain the buffering oxidative stress concept?
Chris Burres [00:18:50]: We call it the BOSS theory. C60 can accept and donate electrons multiple times without being destroyed. A traditional antioxidant like vitamin C donates one electron and is spent. C60 acts more like a catalyst. When it gets into the mitochondria, it neutralizes free radicals being produced as a byproduct of energy production. More efficient mitochondria means more energy for you.
Nick Urban [00:24:23]: How were the skin serums developed?
Chris Burres [00:24:30]: It came from customer feedback. We were getting consistent reports about skin improvements. We partnered with skincare formulators and added copper peptide, GHK-Cu, which is known for skin regeneration. The combination of ESS60 with GHK-Cu has been very well received.
Nick Urban [00:34:39]: Tell us more about the rat longevity study.
Chris Burres [00:34:50]: In 2012, the Baati study was published. They tested C60 dissolved in olive oil for toxicity. Not only was C60 not toxic, the C60 group lived 90% longer than the water control group. They stopped dosing the rats partway through the study. The rats continued to thrive. Something had fundamentally changed.
Nick Urban [00:38:34]: C60 is a generic term for any carbon 60 molecule, and oftentimes it is industrial grade with potential contaminants and carcinogens. ESS60 is the same molecule processed for safe human consumption.
Chris Burres [00:39:18]: Exactly right. There is peer-reviewed published research that proves industrial C60 is harmful. ESS60 is C60 processed for safer human consumption.
Chris Burres [00:40:09]: You get about 0.8 milligrams per milliliter of ESS60 in olive oil, about 0.6 in avocado oil, and 0.3 in MCT oil. My routine is MCT in my coffee, a teaspoon and a half. While that is blending, I take a teaspoon and a half of the olive oil product straight. Then I put it on salads for lunch.
Chris Burres [00:40:50]: We tested 22 brands on the market. The concentrations were woefully low. Only one had the concentration they claimed. We have been manufacturing this molecule since 1991. We have the HPLC to test concentration. Our mixing protocol is now two and a half to three weeks.
Nick Urban [00:45:23]: When I first came across C60 six or seven years ago, I saw one study showing promise and another showing concern. As I dug in, I discovered many negative studies were problematic. And there is no incentive to study C60 since nobody can patent it.
Chris Burres [00:46:39]: Some of that might happen with water-soluble versions. There may be value in it being a lipid fullerene. Our cell walls are oil-based, so having a molecule with oil attached could facilitate getting it into the cell wall and mitochondria.
Chris Burres [00:48:19]: There is no research on stacking C60. What we know for sure is that it gets into the mitochondria and is an antioxidant that works differently than traditional ones. We do not have any contraindications with any medications or supplements.
Chris Burres [00:51:27]: I highly recommend taking it on flights. My wife and I have noticed a significant positive impact on jet lag. Flying with a 12 or 18 hour difference and barely feeling the impact. We have a pilot who distributes the brand in the Middle East based on his positive experience.
Nick Urban [00:52:30]: Chris, this has been fun. I am glad we got back together for a round two and discussed the effects I am noticing after using MyVitalC’s ESS60.
Chris Burres [00:53:08]: When you go to the link, you can get an individual bottle. We do a 25% discount on subscription. There will also be a coupon code for an additional $15 off your initial order.
Nick Urban [00:53:50]: Nick, thank you so much for having me. This is awesome.
