Supplements are a huge part of longevity, vitality, and overall health optimization.

Certain key ingredients can help us reverse biological age and live a higher quality of life.

Hundreds of thousands of products and ingredients are touted for their potential.

Amidst the hype, however, some stand out as promising scientific breakthroughs. One of which, is the rapidly growing supplement called “GlyNac”. It’s gaining the attention of longevity scientists, experts, and now the general public.

This multifaceted supplement is especially notable for its role in slowing the aging process.

GlyNAC influences 7/12 known hallmarks of aging Click To Tweet

This science-backed guide dives deep into the world of GlyNAC. We’ll explore what it is, the science behind how it works, the best GlyNAC supplements, natural sources, the myriad of health benefits, and everything you should know about it.

What is GlyNAC?

GlyNAC is a dynamic combination of two non-essential amino acids: glycine and N-acetyl-cysteine (NAC). Both components play crucial roles within the body’s intricate symphony of physiological processes and are often deficient in the modern diet. GlyNAC is a unique supplement that combines both of these two in particular ratios which confers health, longevity, and many other benefits.

Glycine is a building block for proteins and a cofactor in the production of glutathione. Which is a potent antioxidant that shields our cells from harmful free radicals that contribute to chronic diseases. Glycine also supports collagen production; the foundation of healthy skin, joints, and bones.

NAC, on the other hand, readily donates its acetyl group, fueling various biochemical processes essential for maintaining optimal health. Especially, detoxification.

Both are great alone, but when combined, create a powerful synergy. GlyNAC even impacts the brain, supporting brain chemical (neurotransmitter) production and general cognition. More on those later.

Review & Comparison of the Best GlyNAC Supplements

Biostack Labs GlyNAC+

biostacklabs glynac img

Biostack Labs, founded by a team of biohackers, is an emerging longevity-focused supplement company. They‘re known for their innovative high-quality supplements designed to optimize human performance. Biostack Labs GlyNAC+ is one of their standout products.

What sets GlyNAC+ apart is its unique formulation enhanced with a powerful longevity supplement. Check out my Calcium Alpha-Ketoglutarate (Ca-AKG) review to learn why this is such a fascinating anti-aging molecule.

It also has a superior ratio of 3000mg glycine to 1,200mg NAC in each serving.

Biostack sources its ingredients from trusted suppliers and produces to the highest quality standards. Each batch of GlyNAC+ undergoes rigorous third-party testing to guarantee purity and potency.

They’re also one of the top community-focused biohacking supplement vendors. They have thriving groups on WhatsApp (which I am part of) and Facebook where they constantly help customers with their questions.

The main downside of this one is the price. Biostack’s GlyNAC+ is more expensive than competitors, but if you bought Ca-AKG separately, you’d be paying far more.

Customers rave about the positive impact GlyNAC+ has on their energy levels, immune function, and overall well-being.

Biostack Labs GlyNAC+ is the most advanced formulation, featuring additional nutrients, and with a commitment to quality.

LiftMode GlyNAC-ET

Liftmode GlyNAC ET img

LiftMode is a less-known brand that specialized in brain supplements before expanding to other markets. In fact, their sister company, NewMind, is among the best nootropic vendors.

Among their lineup is LiftMode GlyNAC-ET, a cutting-edge product designed to optimize the absorption of GlyNAC and exert a greater impact on the brain.

GlyNAC-ET capsules are formulated with a specific dosage of 50mg of N-Acetyl Cysteine Ethyl Ester (NAC-ET) and 375mg of Glycine. This combo is often called GlyNAC-ET.

This sets LiftMode GlyNAC-ET apart from the rest.

I also like that it doesn’t have any other additives or harmful ingredients.

Choose LiftMode’s GlyNACET for maximum impact on the brain.

Pure Encapsulations GlyNAC Powder

pureencapsulations glynac

Pure Encapsulations is one of the largest (and premium) trusted supplement brands. All their products, including their GlyNAC Powder, are specially formulated to support folks with sensitivities or dietary restrictions.

Even if you don’t have ingredient sensitivities, these clean formulas are ideal for your body.

Plus, this company invests heavily in scientific research and development and rigorous quality control.

Pure Encapsulations supplements are allergen-free, soy-free, harmful additive-free, non-GMO, and they meet all the hallmarks of quality.

For example, the stabilizers they use in the product are clean and have additional benefits.

This product has two main downsides. First, it’s more expensive than most. You pay a premium for a doctor-endorsed brand.

Second, despite the natural flavoring, NAC itself has a rather unpleasant and strong taste.

If you want the purest yet decent-tasting GlyNAC powder available, choose this product

Myoxcience NAC + Glycine Supreme

myoxcience glynac img e1706524730678

Myoxcience is a brand founded by Mike Mutzel (AKA “Metabolic Mike”) dedicated to hydration and sports performance. Mike’s a pro in the industry and regularly provides excellent educational content. In addition to those product categories, they offer some interesting aging-related supplement formulas. Their NAC + Glycine Supreme Powder is one such example.

Each scoop contains an industry-leading 1600mg NAC as well as 1600mg Glycine. I’d actually prefer to see the ratio more closely match Biostack, but those looking for a high-dose powder will appreciate Myoxcience’s product.

Plus, they’re the only company I found to also include the relaxing amino acid taurine. The combo of glycine and taurine makes for a great pre-bed nootropic sleep aid.

What impressed me most, however, is their “other ingredients” list. Myoxcience takes no shortcuts and uses the most expensive yet healthiest flavors and sweeteners (monk fruit). Without any of the other additives.

Although it’s a bit more expensive than some of the others, the high dosage and purity make this an excellent GlyNAC powder.

Infiniwell GlyNAC

infiniwell glynac img

Infiniwell is a brand with a huge catalog of interesting supplements, peptides, skincare, and more. Although they’re best known for their longevity products. Recently, they launched their GlyNAC Capsules.

The Infiniwell GlyNAC Capsules contain a potent combination of 375mg of NAC and 375mg of Glycine per capsule. If high-dosage in capsule form is your goal, this might be your product.

This wouldn’t be my first pick, mainly for one reason. The inactive ingredients list. These capsules also contain the fillers Magnesium Stearate and Silicon Dioxide. Although they are soy-free, gluten-free, dairy-free, and non-GMO.

If those additives aren’t a dealbreaker for you, Infiniwell GlyNAC could be a great high-potency product.

Formulate Your Own

For the hardcore biohackers, you certainly get the best value by creating your own formulas. Now, this isn’t as hard as it may sound.

You simply buy both Glycine and NAC in bulk and then mix together 500-2,000mg into each serving. You can even get little containers and premix them. For easy and convenient usage later.

DIY GlyNAC supplementation provides the freedom to customize N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC) and Glycine ratios according to your specific needs.

You can also add other ingredients and build your own formulas. This is what I usually do.

The major downside is taste. NAC has a strong sour-ish flavor. You’ll want to also find a good, clean flavoring agent to mask it.

DIY GlyNAC is the ultimate option for budget, convenience, and customization but comes at the cost of time and inconvenience to prepare the formulations yourself.

Popular GlyNAC Supplements I Would Not Use

The following GlyNAC products might be fine.

But for different reasons, as you’ll learn below, I wouldn’t use them.

After all, we have multiple great vendors that I listed above.

Youth & Earth GlyNAC

Youth & Earth is a small but multi-faceted supplement brand. I don’t have much experience with them, but some of my English biohacker friends use their products. I’m not a fan of their product for several reasons. First, these GlyNAC capsules have a lower content of just 250mg of each ingredient per capsule. Second, they don’t even list or show the inactive ingredients anywhere on the website. Finally, this product isn’t very good value. I’d like to see more transparency around this product and its supply chain.

Nature’s Fusions GlyNAC-ET NAC Supplement

Nature’s Fusions is an essential oil brand turned supplement company. I like that they have a product satisfaction guarantee. Although they claim to third-party lab-test their products, I couldn’t find any proof. The big red flag for me is the label itself. For example, they claim all over that the product contains 60 capsules. The label clearly states 60 servings per container, and a serving is two capsules. They also chose to include essential oils in the capsule, which can be nice for some, but this makes it too intense for many people.

Brain Redox™ – High Potency GlyNAC Supplement

This product looked interesting and contains an extremely high dosage of NAC (2,500mg). I wouldn’t take a full serving every day. There’s very little information about the product and its supply chain online, let alone testing data. Unfortunately, it also has a strange metallic taste to it. It might be okay, but I wouldn’t risk it.

HealthSpan Plus Labs GlyNAC

Although it has been on the market since August 2020, this supplement has the very least information of any GlyNAC product I came across. It also has a very low dosage per capsule. The company only sells on Amazon and doesn’t have its own website. I certainly wouldn’t use HealthSpan Plus Labs GlyNAC supplements.

Buyer’s Guide to Choosing the Best GlyNAC

When choosing between the best GlyNAC supplements, you’ll want to consider some key criteria.

Not all these products are equal. Some may do more harm than good.

Here are the factors we considered when rating & reviewing the supplements.

Ingredients

When buying GlyNAC supplements, of course, we should see that the product contains significant dosages of both. For some reason, many products that claim to be GlyNAC actually lack one. GlyNAC products must contain both.

Some products also add beneficial synergistic ingredients like Ca-AKG to further amplify the benefits.

Clean

Many GlyNAC supplements contain all kinds of unnecessary fillers, additives, binders, excipients, and artificial ingredients. Although they might not display toxicity in small doses, this can add up if you take multiple supplements.

The “other ingredients” section of the label should be very short.

Dosage

Some brands contain very low doses of one or both active ingredients in each serving. Don’t be fooled, you’ll want at least 400mg of NAC and 1,000mg of glycine at the very least.

You’ll often see ratios of 1:1 (glycine to NAC) up to 4:1. Your goals and lifestyle help determine your ideal ratios.

Form

You can buy GlyNAC in multiple forms. Capsules, powders, and sometimes even liquids. Pick the type that suits your preferences and lifestyle.

Choose capsules for convenience and precise dosage. Powders for dosing flexibility and customization. Liquids for absorption.

Value

Value matters far more than price. A cheap, on-sale supplement does no good (and is potentially harmful) if it lacks the active ingredient and has toxic contaminants.

You can still find supplements that fit within your budget but also provide high-quality ingredients and a recommended dosage.

Brand

Perhaps most importantly, consider the brand’s reputation. And the seller. They’re not always the same. Find a brand with a record of quality and transparency. They should have cGMP certifications and perform third-party lab testing to ensure the supplement’s purity and potency. Some of the best proudly display their Certificates of Analysis (CoA) on their website.

Scientific Benefits of GlyNAC Supplements

GlyNAC is a promising science-backed supplement showing tremendous potential for optimal aging and overall vitality.

It seems to work by addressing detoxification, oxidative stress burden, collagen production, and glycation.

As of this writing, there are currently 13 clinical trials registered in PubMed, with all but one occurring after 2020. Then, of course, we have hundreds of clinical trials investigating both glycine and NAC independently

While the research is still young, here’s a glimpse into the potential advantages it offers.

Anti-aging & youthfulness

GlyNAC is best known and popular for its role in slowing the biological aging process. It does so through myriad mechanisms—essentially everything listed below.

It supports youthfulness via its antioxidant properties and collagen support. Research shows it can reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, tangibly benefitting skin health and overall anti-aging.

On a cellular level, GlyNACs help offset oxidative stress and inflammation. But it also balances mitochondria, improves cellular detoxification, reduces levels of the amino acid methionine (most of us consume too much), balances immune responses, and even activates autophagy.

Via all these mechanisms, GlyNAC extends a healthy lifespan and reduces the effects of age-related diseases. It also increases lifespan in animal models [R].

According to Baylor College of Medicine, GlyNAC impacts 7/12 known hallmarks of aging, including chronic inflammation, insulin resistance, mitochondrial dysfunction, mitophagy, cellular senescence, gene damage, endothelial dysfunction, and glutathione deficiency [R].

In fact, a study titled, GlyNAC supplementation reverses aging hallmarks in aging humans found that it improved defects in the heart, liver, kidneys, skeletal muscle, and blood, and reversed aging hallmarks in older humans [R]

Cellular resilience

This supplement promotes optimal cellular health.

By supporting glutathione production, GlyNAC shields cells from oxidative stress, the damaging effects of free radicals. It also promotes glutathione production which is often referred to as the “master antioxidant”. GlyNAC also inhibits glycation.

All in all, slowing biological aging and likely optimizing all-cause mortality rates.

Indeed, a randomized clinical trial done in humans found that GlyNAC supplementation in older adults improved glutathione deficiency, oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, inflammation, and physical function [R]. Without adverse effects.

Another randomized human clinical trial found significant acute and long-term increased glutathione levels [R]. Shielding cells against excess stress helps them work more efficiently.

Mitochondrial function

Mitochondria are vital organelles found within cells that provide all the energy our bodies need to carry out biological processes.

Declining mitochondrial health and function is so important that it’s one of the core hallmarks of aging.

As mentioned, GlyNAC is proven to support our mitochondria and improve overall cellular energy metabolism. The benefits even persist after stopping the use of the supplement [R].

One randomized clinical trial done in humans showed that it helps mitochondria work better and accumulate less damage [R].

Anti-glycation

Glycation is a process that occurs in the body where sugar molecules bind to proteins.

Forming harmful substances called advanced glycation end products (AGEs).

AGEs accelerate aging and contribute to chronic diseases.

GlyNAC has been shown to inhibit glycation, potentially slowing down the aging process. Click To Tweet

Ample research on glycine has shown that it’s an excellent anti-glycation substance and a smart supplement to use when dining out.

Brain health & cognition

GlyNAC appears to potentially enhance cognition as well as have neuroprotective effects.

Glutathione levels particularly matter in the brain.

So it’s no surprise that a study suggested that GlyNAC supplementation could specifically promote brain health and support cognitive function in aging. With potential implications for Alzheimer’s disease and mild cognitive impairment [R].

Some users (and a 2018 study in the journal Brain Sciences) report better cognitive function, focus, and memory retention from this supplement.

It’s certainly not GlyNAC’s primary benefit, but it’s still a great choice to help the aging brain.

Natural detoxification

N-acetylcysteine, a component of GlyNAC, is often used in hospitals to treat acetaminophen overdose due to its powerful detoxification properties.

Although that’s the most common medical usage, it’s not the only one.

It helps the body eliminate harmful toxins and heavy metals, which can accumulate over time and contribute to the aging process. I used to use this before drinking to mitigate some of the damaging effects of alcohol.

These natural cellular detoxification benefits largely come from repleting the body’s stores of the antioxidant glutathione.

Respiratory health

Again, N-acetyl cysteine (NAC), a component of GlyNAC, has been used for respiratory conditions.

As an expectorant, it is used to thin mucus and improve lung function, making it easier to breathe.

And also for more serious conditions like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and cystic fibrosis.

GlyNAC will likely have similar benefits when dosed appropriately. The lungs are also one of the body’s key detoxification organs.

Liver health

The liver processes and detoxifies all the most toxic substances that enter the body.

Liver health and our overall health correlate closely.

GlyNAC has been shown to support liver function and protect against liver damage caused by toxins, alcohol, and certain medications.

It’s worth considering as a component of any detox or liver health supplement stack.

Immune health

Over the last few years, NAC became popular as a cheap over-the-counter immune booster.

GlyNAC has immunomodulatory effects. It helps regulate and support the immune system. Enhancing or dampening immune function as needed. This is key to help with autoimmune conditions.

GlyNAC has shown antiviral activity against some viruses, including respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and influenza. By inhibiting viral replication, GlyNAC supports the immune system’s ability to fight off viral infections.

It also promotes a balanced immune response.

Plus, it’s been found to enhance the activation of immune cells such as T cells and natural killer (NK) cells. These cells play critical roles in immune defense against pathogens and cancer cells.

Sports performance & recovery

GlyNAC also has research on its potential benefits in sports performance and recovery.

It reduces exercise-induced oxidative stress, improves muscle function, and supports post-exercise recovery. Although I’d be careful not to use it too close to your training session in order to maximize the hormetic benefits of exercise.

We’ll unpack the findings of some of the most important studies so far.

Harnessing the Power of Food Sources

You won’t find natural food sources that contain high levels of both glycine and N-acetyl-cysteine in their ideal ratios.

While supplements offer a convenient way to boost your GlyNAC intake, you can get appreciable levels of both from your diet. Here are some excellent natural sources to consider:

  • Glycine: Bone broth, chicken, fish, eggs, leafy greens, dairy products (especially cheese and yogurt), soybeans, and pumpkin seeds.
  • NAC: Dairy products (especially whey protein), beef, poultry, fish, eggs, cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage), nuts and seeds (sunflower seeds, Brazil nuts), and even some fruits like avocados and pineapples)

Better yet, you can combine other things with GlyNAC for even greater results.

Add GlyNAC to Your Longevity Stack

Outliyr Healthspan Supplement Protocol Lead Magnet Cheat Sheet Cover

Longevity supplements can get confusing:

Are you wasting money?

Is there significant overlap (and also gaps) in the pathways the supplements activate?

Is the product making a difference?

What if you can simplify your life, take fewer products, and get better effects?

This is all possible, and it comes down to this…

A well-designed longevity stack.

Ideal formulations contain multiple ingredients. Each targets and improves different facets of biological aging.

Keeping you looking and feeling younger and performing optimally.

Together, a multi-supplement formula is more effective than the sum of the parts. This is called the entourage effect, and it’s best understood as the “1+1=3 effect”. And, this powerful ingredient biosynergy often comes with fewer side effects.

So I designed a simple “Longevity Upgrade Cheatsheet” to summarize the benefits of 30+ popular longevity supplements as well as provide my universal essentials. Download it here…

Other Supplements to Stack With GlyNAC for Synergistic Benefits

One of my favorite parts of this research is to discover the synergies. What other ingredients and supplements does GlyNAC combine best with?

Combining GlyNAC with other complementary supplements can amplify its effects and target specific health concerns.

Here are some potential stacking partners to consider:

  • Calcium Alpha-ketoglutarate (CaAKG): A powerful longevity-enhancing supplement with additional performance benefits. Check out my ultimate guide to the top Ca-AKG supplements to learn more.
  • Vitamin C: Enhances GlyNAC’s antioxidant properties and supports glutathione production.
  • Alpha-lipoic acid: Another popular antioxidant that works synergistically with GlyNAC to combat free radical damage.
  • Curcumin: Possesses anti-inflammatory properties that may complement GlyNAC’s benefits for joint health and brain function.
  • Probiotics: Promote gut health and may improve the absorption and utilization of GlyNAC.

Proceed with caution and do your own research first.

A Little Warning

As with any supplement, you’ll want to consult your healthcare practitioner before incorporating GlyNAC into your routine.

GlyNAC is generally well-tolerated, and research has shown that it’s safe [R].

Although rare, some individuals experience mild side effects like nausea, stomach upset, or loose stools— particularly at higher doses.

Additionally, there are some precautions to consider:

  • Pregnant or breastfeeding women: Consult your doctor before using GlyNAC, as its safety during pregnancy and lactation is not fully established.
  • Individuals with certain medical conditions: GlyNAC can interact with some medications or worsen certain pre-existing medical conditions.
  • Allergic reactions: While rare, allergic reactions to GlyNAC are possible. Be mindful of any unusual symptoms.

If you experience any adverse effects or fall into one of the above categories, immediately stop using GlyNAC and consult your doctor.

How to Integrate GlyNAC into Your Supplement Routine (Expert Insights)

Adding GlyNAC to your daily routine is simple.

First, choose one of the above high-quality products.

Manufacturers generally recommend taking it on an empty stomach for optimal absorption. Usually, this means taking it first thing in the morning or 30 minutes before a meal.

Consider stacking GlyNAC with other synergistic supplements based on your specific health goals.

This is mostly for advanced biohackers, as combining supplements can have complex interactions.

Most people do well to jot down their present state before they begin using the supplement (qualitative data). And/or, to use a biohacking wearable to self-quantify their health metrics.

Then, retest after 7 and 30 days to compare changes.

Main Questions Around GlyNAC

These are some of the most common questions I get regarding GlyNAC supplementation.

What’s the best GlyNAC dose?

The best dosage of GlyNAC is 500-2,000mg per day, largely depending on your needs and goals. Follow the recommended dosage on the supplement label and take the minimum effective dose.

Is GlyNAC safe to take?

GlyNAC supplements are generally considered safe for most adults when taken at recommended dosages. Research shows that oral supplementation for 16 weeks is safe and well-tolerated.

Why take GlyNAC instead of glutathione?

Both GlyNAC and glutathione work as antioxidants and increase levels of glutathione in the body, but GlyNAC has additional benefits over standard glutathione supplements.

How long does it take GlyNAC to work?

GlyNAC starts to work immediately, and the perceived changes depend on factors like your baseline health, dosage, and your use case.

The Best GlyNAC for Longevity & Health Optimization

I hope this comprehensive guide has helped you understand GlyNAC.

Research on it is growing fast over the last few years.

There are even human clinical trials showing promising results.

You can certainly get some glycine and NAC from dietary sources.

That’s my approach.

Sometimes, however, I’ll use supplements.

There’s a huge difference between the best and worst GlyNAC products.

You can go the budget route, buy powders in bulk, and make your own. Or, if your priority is convenience and getting multiple great ingredients in one product, I’ve listed some of the top choices here.

If this helped you, I’d love for you to send it to a friend or share it on social media.
